Hi, Jeannie.

At my library, we do not use Symphony, so my advice here will not be about the system.  If you have already weeded the items or otherwise don't have them, what reason do you have for maintaining the data? Were these items that may have been stolen or misplaced and you plan to replace them?  If not, I would think it would be best to update your records so that patrons and staff know what you have. Does this help? Just my $.02.

Sincerely,

Subject: Best Practice Question

Hello Fellow Serials Librarians!

I am managing Serial Control in SirsiDynix Symphony Workflows, and I have been cleaning up the serial control and our current journals tracking. For tracking current journals, we have one barcode for each title, which we scan to mark as used when the new journal is used. Then when it is time to shelve them in the permanent bound journals section, we add them to the catalog in that section. Nothing has ever been removed from serial control, with a few select exceptions.

We have a number of old journal records in serial control that then are listed on our catalog as journals that we have. I would like to delete these serial controls and the bibliographic record that is connected to them so that they are not out there telling our patrons that we have these journals.

Is it best practice to do that, or is there another method that I should really employ instead?

Please advise.

Thank You!
Jeannie
